Two die in separate Gloucester traffic accidents

Two men, including a pedestrian, died in separate vehicle accidents this past weekend in Gloucester, raising the number of traffic fatalities in the county to 13 for 2010.

A Belroi man was fatally struck by a vehicle Friday after he apparently suffered a seizure in a Gloucester roadway. Matthew Donnell Taylor, 27, of Belroi Road, died at the scene of the 11:26 p.m. accident, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Greg Mathias.

Mathias said Taylor received medical treatment at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital earlier in the day and was believed to have been walking to his home when he apparently suffered a seizure and fell onto Belroi Road.

He said the Gloucester Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call just prior to the accident reporting that a man was lying in the road with some type of medical issue. Two minutes later another 911 call reported the man had been hit by a vehicle.

Taylor was struck by a 2006 Pontiac G6 driven by Chase Lee Wagner, 22, of Gloucester, according to Mathias. He said Taylor was wearing dark clothing and was in a dark area of Belroi Road, about three-tenths of a mile west of Virginia Drive, when he was struck by the eastbound vehicle. He said neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the accident and no charges would be placed against the driver. Trooper L.C. Cash investigated the accident.

A 57-year-old Low Ground Road resident died at the scene of a single-vehicle accident on Glass Road on Sunday. Mathias said James Herbert Frazier was driving a 1997 Dodge Ram pickup westbound on Glass Road when he ran off the right side of the road around 6:20 p.m. Mathias said the truck overturned several times and ejected Frazier, who was not wearing a seatbelt. There were no other occupants in the truck.

Mathias said speed appeared to be a factor in the crash, which occurred just prior to the intersection with Brays Point Road in a 45-mile-per-hour zone. Trooper Logan Saunders handled the accident, which is still under investigation.

There have been 15 fatal accidents in the local state police coverage area of Gloucester, Mathews and Middlesex so far this year, including a pedestrian fatality in Mathews and a fatal crash in Middlesex. Mathias said five of the 15 accident victims were under the age of 21.
